Why We Teach Life Skills

When Homeschool Felt Like Something Was Missing

We had started up our homeschool again after Christmas break when I kept having the nagging feeling….”Something is missing.”

We were going through the motions of math and spelling and grammar and history and all the things. We had our routine down. But I knew in my core—this couldn’t be it.

Remembering My Original Vision

At the beginning of the school year, I sat down and wrote out some of the things I wanted my kids to learn.

Not multiplication facts or history dates (though of course that is part of it). I’m talking about life skills. And not just life skills, but life skills God’s way.

I listed character traits I wanted them to grow in and prayed, “God, give me a strategy to teach this to them.”

When I hit this mid-school year slump, I thought back to that list.

This is what we were missing.

When I wrote the list, I thought these lessons would come about organically:

  • We’d learn about servanthood during our daily chores.
  • We’d learn about financial literacy at the grocery store.
  • We’d memorize Scripture if I taped verses on the fridge.

But the reality? Time slipped through my fingers. Days went by, and many of those things never came up.

Here’s the hard truth I’m learning: teaching our kids biblical truths and life skills doesn’t just “happen.”

It takes:

  • Being strategic about what’s most important
  • Intentionality
  • Discipline
  • Making space in our day

Our New Strategy

So what’s our personal solution? We decided to incorporate Biblical life skills directly into our homeschool.

We’re not just teaching financial literacy—we’re teaching stewardship and faithfulness.
We’re not just teaching household chores—we’re teaching what it means to have a servant’s heart like Jesus.

THIS is what was missing.
THIS is what I envisioned for our homeschool.
THIS is what I believe God was pulling us toward all along.

An Encouragement for You

Maybe you’ve felt something is missing in your homeschool too. Maybe you’ve felt that same tug in your heart.

If so, here’s my encouragement:

  • Pray about the things you want your children to learn while they’re under your roof.
  • Make a list.
  • Ask God for a strategy.
  • Then make. It. Happen.

The enemy will fight you for it, but these things are 100% worth fighting for!
