If you’re a homeschool mom who wants to disciple your kids without adding more overwhelm, this is for you.
In this post, I’ll show you why the everyday moments in your home—especially around the table—are the most powerful place for real discipleship to happen (even if life feels messy and imperfect).

It usually happens on a normal evening around the dinner table.
We’re eating and laughing—sometimes settling an argument, sometimes cleaning up the food my youngest spilled—when a question is asked. Sometimes the questions are simple and curious. Other times, they stop you mid-bite.
Questions like:
- “What was the Garden of Eden like?”
- “Why do bad things happen to good people?”
It’s here—in the midst of meals, laughter, and chaos—that I believe the most meaningful discipleship moments happen.
Not in perfectly planned Bible lessons.
Not in polished family devotionals (though both are great tools).
It’s in the everyday moments—
when our kids feel safe enough to ask questions
and we are present enough to hear them.
Discipleship Is a Parent’s Calling (Not Just the Church’s Job)
Today, it’s easy to fall into the mindset that the church will disciple our children.
If we take them to Sunday service (bonus points for Wednesday nights), surely they’re learning everything they need to know about God and His Word.
✔️ We show up.
✔️ We check the box.
✔️ We move on.
But here’s the truth I want to gently encourage you with:
Discipling our kids is not just the job of the church. It’s our job as parents.
The church is an important support—but it was never meant to replace what happens in the home.
Kids need daily opportunities to see faith lived out, wrestle with real questions, and watch repentance, humility, and obedience modeled.
Once a week isn’t enough.
“And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.“
– Deuteronomy 6:6-7
The richest discipleship moments happen in everyday life:
- while brushing teeth
- during car rides
- while playing a game
- while doing chores together

You Don’t Have to Be a Theologian to Disciple Your Kids
If you’re like me, you didn’t major in theology.
(Actually, if you’re like me, you don’t have a degree at all!)
Maybe the word discipleship feels overwhelming.
Maybe you picture deep theological discussions led by experts.
Maybe you already feel behind before you’ve even started.
Here’s what you need to know:
You don’t have to be perfect—or highly educated—to disciple your children well.
What matters most is that you:
- consistently point them to Jesus
- reflect His character in your home
You don’t need all the answers.
You just need to be willing to seek them together.
Even your mistakes can point your kids to Christ when you remain honest, humble, and willing to repent.
Simple Faith Rhythms Make the Biggest Difference
One of the best ways to help your children’s relationship with Jesus grow is by creating simple, everyday rhythms.
Not complicated systems.
Not rigid schedules.
Just steady habits that gently bring God into your daily life.
For our family, that looks like:
- morning time in the Word (sometimes together, sometimes individually)
- dinner around the table
- weekly family prayer
- daily conversations about God
Your rhythms may look different—and they should.
Every family is unique. Pray about how the Lord is calling you to lead your home. He is faithful to give wisdom.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s consistency.

Want this done for you?

Why the Family Table Matters So Much
There is something deeply special about the table.
It’s where:
- stories are shared
- values are formed
- character is shaped
- family culture is built
These ordinary, real-life moments are often the ones God uses to help shape the life and faith of our children.
The Heart Behind At The Table Co
This belief is the heartbeat of At The Table Co.

Start Where You Are
If there’s one encouragement I want to leave you with, it’s this:
Start where you are.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life.
Ask yourself this simple question: Where can we invite God into our day?
Start small.
Stay steady.
You can do this. We’re here to cheer you on!
If this helped, you’ll also love…
