How We Approach Bible Time in Our Home

There is nothing more important than teaching our kids about the love of Jesus. In our home, Bible reading and time spent with God are top priorities. We aren’t perfect (anyone else behind on their Bible reading plan?), but we are aware of our need for Him.

There have been several different ways we have gone about this over the years. When the kids were younger, we read Bible stories to them before bed. My daughter’s favorite was the story of Jonah (I have a video of her at 3 years old reciting the whole thing), and my son’s favorite was the story of Jesus providing a coin for Peter in the mouth of a fish (he has always loved fishing and hunting).

As they got older, I tried having them read and pray on their own in the mornings. In my opinion, there is something powerful about giving God the first slice of your day, and I wanted to impart that to my kids. However, I realized pretty quickly that they weren’t ready to comprehend the Word on their own yet. So we started to read together and then discuss the meaning of the chapter we read.

Now that my kids are older elementary age, we do a mixture of both. Sometimes we will read a chapter together, and sometimes I let them read on their own (often I will ask them what they read and what stuck out to them). When we read together, we do a lot of discussion, and I try to get their minds thinking: How does this apply to my life today? What is God trying to show me?

All that to say, we have some favorite products that we have used over the years that I would love to share with you. They have been SUCH a huge blessing to our family, and I hope they are to yours as well.

Our Favorite Children’s Bibles by Age:

Beginner’s Bible for Little Ones

For the youngest kids—I encourage you to read this even before they can fully comprehend it. They’re never too young to hear the Word!

Beginner’s Bible for Young Children

This Bible holds so many memories for our family. These are the stories my daughter memorized and my son enjoyed. It’s where my kids first became curious about the Lord. The light in their little eyes while reading this is something I’ll remember forever.

Boy’s NLT Bible (Ages 7–11)

I couldn’t find my son’s exact Bible (they must not make it anymore), but this one looks pretty close. NLT is our favorite translation, especially for the younger years. It’s much easier to understand while still being accurate.

Girl’s NLT Journaling Bible (Ages 8–14)

My daughter LOVES this journaling Bible! There are little Scriptures to color on the sides as well as space to take notes (she does both, and it’s so fun to watch). Highly recommend.

Best Bible for Youth & Teens

We are also youth pastors, so even though we don’t have teenagers yet, we are around them a lot (and have been for a long time). This is our favorite Bible to recommend for students. This site also has kids’ and adult Bibles that we love.

Bible Study Resources for Kids

The Bible Recap for Kids

I did The Bible Recap through the Bible App this past year and really enjoyed it, and my mother-in-law grabbed this for our kids. I will say—it has a LOT of reading for each day. We had to break it up quite a bit instead of reading it all in one sitting. But it has great discussion questions and activities that the kids really enjoyed.

Journaling Kit w/ Highlighters and Notes

Highlighting, note taking, and journaling are all fun ways to get your kids to engage in Bible reading. My daughter has this specific journaling set and is obsessed. My son just uses a normal yellow highlighter, so I don’t have much to suggest there. I only recommend items we actually use in our home.

Scripture Coloring Book

If you have an artistic child, this Scripture coloring book is a great option. My daughter loves these, and it truly does help hide the Word in their hearts.

Final Encouragement for Parents

I know it can feel overwhelming at times to build consistent Bible habits with our kids—especially when life is busy and we don’t feel like we’re doing it “perfectly.” But I’ve learned that faithfulness matters more than perfection. Even small, imperfect moments spent in God’s Word can have an eternal impact. My prayer is that these resources help make Bible time a little more approachable and a little more meaningful for your family too.
